"CITIZENS OF THE WORLD, accept
the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your
divine right." 1 Studying Science and Health, and witnessing the healings taking place in my family because of this study, eventually made me investigate the church that the author, Mary Baker Eddy, had established. I loved the spiritual nourishment I got from the Wednesday evening meetings I attended, through the insights and healings that others related. Eventually, I decided to join that church. The truths I was discovering in Science and Health were so dynamic that they were not just raising my consciousness but enriching my daily contacts and experience as well. The message of the Christ was changing my whole life, without even a conscious effort on my part to bring about that change. ONE EXCITING experience I had involved
the mother of one of my children's classmates. She had been taken seriously
ill and become paralyzed and bedridden. This distressed my children, and
they kept asking me how to pray about the situation. They also kept begging
me to give her a copy of Science and Health. She was a medical
nurse, though, and I didn't think she would be open to the idea of spiritual
healing. Having been severely criticized by other friends about relying
on spiritual healing, I was doubly cautious. But my children kept persisting,
and I felt I owed it to them to show them that I was willing to share
with this woman what had blessed us. GOD'S GOVERNMENT is not limited to a
certain set of people. It embraces everyone in the infinite universe of
Spirit. You and I can realize this true government through love and an
unselfish desire to help others. Spiritual love breaks prejudice, removes
barriers, and blossoms as we serve our fellow beings. After my friend's healing, many of my former church friends came in to the Christian Science Reading Room to buy Science and Health while I was working there. We have had many happy times together, and many of them are committed readers of the textbook and have experienced spiritual healing. In fact, they now run healing services in their own church. Science and Health says: "God has endowed man with inalienable
rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. Man is
properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by
his Maker, divine Truth and Love." 2 Beginning in individual consciousness,
this righteous government will increasingly be seen throughout the world
in an ever-widening circle of health and freedom. You and I will contribute
to this freedom as we let the spirit of pure love shine within us. 1 Science and Health, p. 227. 2 Ibid., p. 106. |
