Reports of Healing

Business conflict resolved; son quickly healed of injury
From The Christian Science Journal,  February, 1999

FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS I was a real estate broker and loan officer. On one particular transaction, the clients came to me for help in obtaining pre-approval on a loan. One of the lenders I used frequently supplied the necessary letter, and the clients were then able to proceed with the building of their home.

When we put the final loan paperwork together and sent it off to the lender, however, we were shocked to learn the clients were denied the loan for which they had been given pre-approval.

Initially I was angry and confused at what I felt had been a lack of thoroughness on the part of the loan manager I had been dealing with. But as I prayed, I was able to calm my thinking and gain a clearer view of this individual as the perfect, flawless child of God. With a fresh sense of purpose and direction, I repackaged the loan. Within twenty-four hours I had a full, final loan approval from a different lender. It was, however, at a higher interest rate, which led to hard feelings on the part of my clients, and they decided to take their business to a competitor instead.

As soon as I finished my telephone conversation with them, I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to help me gain a renewed sense of calm and order in my thought. She emphatically stated that no good can be taken from us. As the beloved child of God, I could not be robbed of what is truly mine—complete perfection. Science and Health points out, “The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love” (p. 322).

In the days that followed, I silently affirmed that there could be no disloyalty to good, no loss of time invested, nor lack of reward for a job well done. Late one afternoon, the husband suddenly appeared in my office to say they had changed their minds about the loan that I had obtained for them. Evidently, my competitor had not been completely honest with them and had misstated facts in order to gain their business. I felt such gratitude and joy in the truth being revealed.

No one can raise three active boys without facing many challenges. My youngest son had a healing of a bruised kidney while he was a senior in high school. In January of 1993 we had enough of a snowstorm for school to be closed for the day. My son and some friends were riding on a large inner tube that they were pulling behind a vehicle over the snowy fields not far from our house. As they rounded a curve, the inner tube popped and my son struck a large pile of sharp rocks. The other boys brought him home just as I came home from work. Because he was on the high-school basketball team, the coach demanded that he have a physical examination before he could practice with the team. So that afternoon we went to see a doctor who is aware that we are Christian Scientists. He advised us that our son should have only limited physical activity for at least a week. He diagnosed a severely bruised kidney and recommended that we consult a specialist.

We went home and called a practitioner for Christian Science treatment. As my son talked with her, she recommended that he read the answer to the question “What is man?” in Science and Health, particularly this sentence: “Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique” (p. 475).
The following Sunday we all attended church together. As my son was listening to the service, he was also leafing through a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel that had been left in the hymnal rack. I noticed at one point that he began to read an article very intently.

After we reached home he took a nap. On waking, he began to share with me how he felt certain that he had been completely healed, as the woman in the Bible with the issue of blood had been healed (see Luke 8:43–48). By the next afternoon he was able to participate in a full practice with the basketball team, and there was no further evidence of internal bleeding or any other physical discomfort.

I continually praise and thank God for Mary Baker Eddy and her discovery of Christian Science, which stands as a beacon for Truth and Principle. I am also grateful for the many dedicated practitioners and their unceasing prayerful work.

I am the son referred to in my mother’s testimony. My brothers and I have had a number of healings over the years, but this was the most dramatic, complete healing in my life to that point. Words cannot express my joy when I woke from my nap that Sunday afternoon and went to the bathroom knowing that there would be no blood or any other physical evidence from this accident ever again.
Many thanks to my parents for including a strong foundation of Christian Science in my upbringing, and to the practitioner for her effective treatment.
