Beth Schaefer
Second Reader
After graduating from Principia College with a degree in both sociology and Spanish, Beth counseled incarcerated teenagers. In addition, she ran a shelter for abused and runaway children and oversaw a long-term corrective program for teenage boys.
Next, Beth worked as an environmental educator taking students into the mountains of California and Colorado. She also spent time working for the U.S. Forest Service as a Wilderness Ranger. Her duties included fighting forest fires across the Western United States.
An opportunity to promote and expand community service opportunities for college students took Beth out of the woods and into the academic world. In her position as director of the community service program at a small liberal arts college, Beth had the opportunity to help women living in a battered women’s shelter, minority children in after-school programs, young men serving time in a state correctional facility, and low income families with housing needs.
In working to find solutions to community needs, Beth found that long lasting solutions came by addressing spiritual needs. This led her to go into the full time healing ministry. In addition to her work as a Christian Science practitioner, Beth teaches Christian Science in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Most recently, Beth spent the last two years as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship sharing how Christian Science heals with teens, religious classes, homeless shelters and members of the general public eager to hear about spiritual healing.
Beth enjoys horseback riding, hiking and climbing — climbing a 14,000 foot peak almost every summer. Her family includes her husband and two grown children. Whether pounding the pavement, sitting in the saddle, or climbing for that higher view, Beth still finds the best adventure to be that of healing and helping others to understand God better!
