SUMMARY

Provides for the rapid and effective detection, assessment, communication, response, and resolution of conditions affecting the safety and security at the Mother Church.  The incumbent promotes a safe, secure and harmonious environment for employees, visitors, facilities, buildings and activities at The Mother Church.  Monitors and facilitates access to the Church Center buildings and properties. Monitors security situation in Church Center. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Monitors and facilitates access of authorized personnel, vehicles, mail, packages, and materials to Church Center buildings and property.  Maintains a knowledgeable of client departments’ personnel and procedures for handling guests, mail, etc.  Is entrusted with and must control keys and communications equipment.

 

2.      Maintains a continuous and vigilant watch over persons and property.  Assesses and reports any unusual situations or inappropriate activity.  Uses the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in the Security Communication Center (SCC) and Library Security Communications Center (LSCC) to observe activities at locations monitored by CCTV cameras. While on duty in the SCC, monitors and assesses alarms received through a network of interrelated security, fire detection and environmental (HVAC) alarm systems located throughout the Center and Church-owned off-site properties.  Conducts patrols of the Plaza and facilities to ensure a safe and secure work environment.

3.      Maintains a continuous communications link with other shift team members, using sophisticated security and telecommunications equipment, radio code protocol, and frequent face-to-face contacts.  Preserves strict confidentiality of sensitive information necessary to, or learned in the course of, the performance of duties.  Informs the Shift Supervisor of any situation that may impact on the security and safety of the Church Center.  Maintains a keen awareness of the Church Center environment and provides accurate verbal and written descriptions of individuals, vehicles, and events.  Completes forms, logs, and reports necessary to document the accomplishment of regular duties and the response to non-routine and emergency incidents. Utilizes security communications equipment to maintain continuous contact with other team members. Communicates unsafe conditions (e.g., improperly stored hazardous liquids/materials), unsecured assets (e.g., unlocked offices) and the presence of unauthorized individuals or activities

 

4.      Responds directly to situations in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and supervisory direction. To ensure timely and effective response, the Host must become thoroughly familiar with Church Center buildings and grounds.  The Host may be required to assist in building evacuations, and to meet and coordinate with responding units from the Boston Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical System (EMS). 

5.      Responds, as appropriate, to questions from the public about Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Science, the Church Center or the Mary Baker Eddy Library, and directs inquirers to activities and resources supporting the Center’s functions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience

A High School diploma, or equivalent work experience, is required.  Previous security or safety experience is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skills

The incumbent must be able to learn, retain, and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of Church Center “geography”, security and life-safety alarm systems, and procedures.  A valid driver’s license is required. 

 

Technology Skills

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) skills are required.

 

Work Environment

This position regularly works in a security office or lobby environment.  Uniforms are supplied at the expense of the Department.  The physical requirements for this job include walking long distances and standing for long periods of time.  While patrolling the premises, the incumbent must be able safely to climb stairs and ladders, enter enclosed mechanical/equipment areas of buildings, and walk on roofs of buildings.  The environmental conditions of this job include working outdoors under all weather conditions. A Security Host is typically assigned to one of three shifts, but may be required to work on other shifts to meet operational needs.  Because the Security Services Department provides services around the clock, 365 days a year, working on weekends and holidays and overtime is a requirement. This position is essential to the operation of the Church Center, and may be required to wear a Church-issued pager and report to work during off-hours and during periods of inclement weather, including times when the Church Center is officially closed.
